Collecting Coins

Have you ever thought about buying gold coins? When I was younger I decided to try and start a stamp collection, however, after just a couple of months I had already given it up to pursue other interests, namely anything else that was more interesting than a book of stamps. However, as I have become older I have started to realise that collecting something like stamps can be a rewarding endeavour and more recently I have started to collect coins. I had no idea at first how you even went about buying coins and how much different coins were worth. After some investigating on the internet I found a few useful websites and started to buy a few coins.

I was especially intrigued by some of the different 22ct gold coins you could buy such as the American Gold Eagle and the British Britannia coin. What’s more, I had been reading a lot in the news lately about the rise in the price of gold and how it is a good investment for your money at the moment in order to guard against inflation. I decided to buy a couple of Britannia coins at first from the Royal Mint and some gold Krugerrand coins. I also bought some cheaper silver coin sets from a couple of local dealers and some older commemorative coins that took my fancy. Although it was a fairly large initial outlay at first, I thought that I could sell gold coins to one of these stores who are always offering “cash for gold” at a later date and make my money back or even make a profit. I’m not sure if you could call it a collection just yet, perhaps it is merely an assortment of coins but I’ve now caught the bug and am constantly on the lookout for new and interesting coins. You do have to, however, guard against buying any fake coins which are no more than gold scrap, so try to use only reputable dealers. It would be an idea to do some research on internet on the marks and features of different coins, so that you can work out if a coin is a fake or not. I would strongly recommend starting your own collection, if you have the time and money, as it is something you could pass onto children or grand children and will hopefully have greater value in the future.
